Who Gets to Choose?
I recently received notice giving me exactly 24 hours to justify my candidacy to a 13-member committee. I have been a registered Republican for 40 years, yet this small group now proposes to decide whether party resources should favor another candidate before Wyoming voters ever have a chance to speak.
Wyoming Statute W.S. 22-25-104
“No political party funds shall be expended directly or indirectly in the aid of the nomination of any one person as against another person of the same political party running in the primary election.”
Party leadership recently hired a Washington, D.C., law firm and filed a federal lawsuit challenging that law. The party has every right to challenge a statute in court, but until a judge rules otherwise, that statute remains the law.
Many of us, including members of this committee, have sworn oaths to support and defend our constitution and the rule of law. We are all bound by those oaths. This vetting process does not strengthen democracy. Instead, it concentrates control in fewer hands while asking voters to stand aside.
We, the voters, will decide who represents us.
In doing so, we will also decide whether the rule of law still matters in Wyoming.
