An Oath Is Not a Loyalty Pledge

Public office is a public trust. An oath belongs to the Constitution and the citizens, not a political machine, powerful donor, party leader, or president. Jimmy explains why independent judgment, honest oversight, and the courage to question power still matter.

The oath is to the Constitution

Every federal officeholder swears the same oath: to support and defend the Constitution. Not a party platform. Not a donor’s agenda. Not a president, a Speaker, or a committee chair. The Constitution — and, through it, the citizens who consented to be governed by it.

That distinction sounds obvious until it’s tested. It’s tested every time a vote pits what a party leader wants against what a constituent needs, or what a major donor expects against what the law actually requires. An oath that bends to whichever pressure is loudest that week was never really an oath — it was a loyalty pledge wearing the oath’s language.

Independent judgment is part of public service

Representing Wyoming means exercising judgment, not just relaying instructions. Constituents don’t send a senator to Washington to vote however leadership tells him to vote — they send him to weigh the evidence, weigh the Constitution, and cast the vote he can defend to the people who hired him.

That doesn’t mean independence for its own sake, or contrarianism as a brand. It means the willingness to look at a party-line vote and ask whether it actually serves Wyoming, even when the easier path is to go along.

Accountability requires questioning power

Oversight only works if someone is willing to ask the uncomfortable question — of a president from either party, a party leadership structure, or a donor network expecting a return on its investment. A representative who never questions power isn’t being loyal. He’s being useful to whoever holds it.

Wyoming deserves a senator whose first loyalty is legible: the Constitution, and the citizens it answers to. Everything else is negotiable. That isn’t.
